Glassbel Office

GLASSBEL became a partner of SmartFlex within the European Union’s Seventh Framework Program. The project focuses on the manufacture of individually designed photovoltaic facade elements on an industrial scale. GLASSBEL is involved in this project as a producer of the final product – insulated glass units with integrated PV cells (BiPV).

GLASSBEL Baltic office in Klaipeda became a major test building for the project SmartFlex. The 90 pcs of glass panels installed to the double skin facade with about 5000 pcs. of PV cells. Estimated energy generation is 100 MW per year.

GLASSBEL facade was successfully tested and now is working all over the year.

Red River College

The scales on the wings of the Morpho butterfly inspired a Swiss company to develop a glass covering for solar panels, and Winnipeg’s Red River College – currently undergoing expansive redevelopment – will be the first in North America to benefit from the research.

Like the butterfly’s bright scales, which shift colour in flight, the Kromatix-branded coloured glass panels will conduct and conserve energy as their hue changes with the light. Red River College is building a new facility, across from the main campus, which will incorporate the glass technology.

Kromatix was created seven years ago by Swissinso S.A. in partnership with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne to address aesthetic and technical aspects of photovoltaic solar panels.

Construction of a building integrated PV façade system to meet architects’ requirements.

The biggest challenge when it comes to building was that BIPV must comply to harsh weather condition. The following tender specifications are used:
Temperature: -40 Deg C to +85 Deg C
Relative Humidity of 100%
Wind Velocity of 200km/h
Pouring rain and heavy hail(<25mm)

These multifunctionalities were successfully tested alongside several experiments conducted by the CSTC.

The French Ministry of Defence

The project consist of green architecture with bioclimatic design. It is a self sufficient building 10 months per year. The building will then produce 80% energy on site using renewables.

There were challenges such as design challenges where there were no photovoltaic appearance. They were needed at least 1500 different modules shapes that match the roof geometry. The PV modules then act as building materials which substitute of steel gratings.
